Our Story
Sunstone co-owners Katie Clark, Amy Clay, and George Coyne
Sunstone Counseling began in 2011 when co-owners Amy Clay, LPC and George Coyne, LCSW had a vision to serve Northern Virginia with comprehensive, accessible, and high-quality mental health counseling.
With locations in Falls Church and Old Town Alexandria, Amy and George joined forces with Katie Clark, LPC and registered play therapist (RPT). Katie aimed to serve the growing need for child and adolescent counseling and opened Sunstone’s McLean office in 2018.
Since its inception, Sunstone Counseling has grown to more than 70 therapists in five Virginia locations: City of Falls Church, Old Town Alexandria, McLean, and its newest locations, Ashburn and Richmond.

When Amy and George started the practice, they wanted the name to convey their approach to uplifting and guiding clients to a better and brighter life. Alongside their colleagues, they discovered the sunstone, a bright and colorful stone long believed to have healing and energetic properties and the ability to improve one’s mental and emotional health.
Sunstones have been used in some cultures to alleviate depression and anxiety, and to encourage independence, self-empowerment, confidence, and vitality. The Vikings even used it as a directional tool to guide them on challenging journeys.
