Sunstone Counseling is currently seeking dedicated Child Therapists (pre-licensed or licensed) practicing creative therapy techniques with afternoon and evening availability to support children and their families at our McLean, VA office. Description

Sunstone Counseling invites dedicated Child Therapists to join our Alexandria, VA team to provide therapeutic support to children ages 3 and up and their families through therapeutic play and child-focused counseling methods.

The role is designed to address issues such as emotional dysregulation, anxiety, social skills, and other developmental concerns. Our team provides a supportive environment where therapists can use play therapy techniques and child-centric approaches to foster resilience and emotional health in young clients.

For pre-licensed therapists, Sunstone offers in-house clinical supervision with a focus on developmental psychology, play therapy, and child-centered counseling techniques. Therapists will deliver ethical and professional counseling services under the appropriate supervision as dictated by the Board of Counseling or Social Work, focusing primarily on child and family counseling.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct initial assessments to determine the therapeutic needs of the child.
  • Collaborate with families to support the child’s development and therapeutic goals.
  • Develop and implement tailored intervention plans using play therapy and other child-appropriate techniques.
  • Monitor and adapt interventions based on the child's progress and evolving needs.
  • Participate in peer consultation groups and training sessions to refine therapeutic skills.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of sessions, assessments, and progress notes in compliance with insurance and Sunstone Counseling requirements.
  • Engage in regular supervision to enhance clinical skills and ensure adherence to ethical standards (Pre-licensed therapist only).

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology with a focus on children.
  • Certification in play therapy is highly desired.
  • Must obtain State Board Approval to work as a Resident or hold an existing license in the State of Virginia as an LPC, LCSW, or LMFT.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficient in play therapy techniques and child development theories.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a particular emphasis on sensitive interactions with children and their families.
  • Strong ethical foundation and adherence to confidentiality agreements.
  • Ability to work flexibly and responsively with a diverse client population.

Our internship program is part of our commitment to both the professional field of counseling and to our community. Graduate Interns receive in-person weekly supervision from licensed therapists and through weekly peer consultation groups. The internship program exposes interns to a variety of client populations and clinical issues. Clients, in turn, benefit from reduced session rates and access to professional counseling services, which may otherwise have been inaccessible due to financial restrictions.

Sunstone strives to provide a supportive and collaborative workplace where students can develop their careers. Our practice is designed to help all counselors develop a strong caseload of preferred clients, as well as cultivate their clinical skills and competencies.

Students may fulfill practicum requirements at Sunstone if they are completed along with an internship semester.

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform 16-20 hours/week of clinical (direct) and administrative (indirect) functions
  • Conduct intake sessions with potential clients
  • Conduct 55-min counseling sessions (minimum of six to eight hours of psychotherapy per week)
  • Attend weekly supervision to gain clinical support and feedback
  • Attend weekly peer supervision groups and cohort meetings
  • Conduct relevant assessments and mandatory reporting as necessary
  • Participate in individual and practice development
  • Please note we require two weekday evenings and/or one weekend day in order to meet university hour requirements

  • High degree of ethics and a practice of discretion and confidentiality

Sunstone Counseling is seeking a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) to join our team in Richmond (Glen Allen), VA. This full-time position involves maintaining a clinical caseload while providing supervision to Counselors in Residence or Resident Social Workers. Candidates must be licensed through the Virginia Board of Counseling or Social Work and either be eligible to become a supervisor or already be a certified clinical supervisor.

Job Responsibilities include:

  • Supervision of Sunstone Counselors in Residence or Resident Social Workers
  • Filling out all necessary documentation with the supervisee
  • Assist with mandatory reporting when needed
  • Meet with each supervisee as required by their professional board
  • Development and creation with supervisees of treatment plans, reading, and signing
  • Development and creation with supervisees of assessments, reading, and signing
  • Teach and review clinical notes
  • Attend monthly peer supervision meetings and weekly peer groups.

Qualifications/Requirements include:

Sunstone Counseling is currently seeking Couples Counselors (pre-licensed or licensed) for evening and/or weekend sessions at one of our Sunstone office locations.

Couples counselors provide professional guidance to help couples resolve conflicts and issues related, but not limited to, communication, intimacy, infidelity, parenting, premarital issues, infertility, and divorce.  For pre-licensed couples counselors, Sunstone offers in-house clinical supervision in modalities including, but not limited to, IMAGO, Gottman, and EFT couples counseling techniques. 

This couples therapist will provide ethical and professional counseling services through Sunstone Counseling while under the appropriate supervision in residency or as a licensed clinician by the Board of Counseling or Social Work, with a primary dedication to couples counseling.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

To perform in this position successfully, an individual must be able to execute each essential core responsibility satisfactorily.   • Perform initial evaluations of client needs and develop customized treatment plans.
